Tabula Rasa, Latin for 'a clean slate', is a phrase coined to indicate the heating and erasing of a wax, clay, or felt tablet. This medieval tablet is constructed of a laminated material with a steel snap. Located inside is a solid brass stylus (yes they referred to the writing utensil as a stylus) that is used to write and erase. Traditionally, these were layered in wax, which could be heated to erase the writing, but later were replaced by felt, which can be erased somewhat immediately.
